Famous for its rich industrial heritage, its current status as a young and energetic university city, and its long standing reputation as the birthplace of Chilean rock, Concepcion offers a wide variety of activities for all ages. As Chile's second largest metropolitan area, Concepcion provides insight into the country's culture and history. The region's long history of national industrial development can be explored through a visit to one of numerous museums, through tours, or by wandering the city streets. If you have always dreamed about having your own rock band, then you are sure to find a classic Chilean band or an emerging artist sharing their music at an inner city bar or venue. Whether it is a melody, the lush natural scenery, or a piece of nation's past, there is something to marvel at every corner.
Concepción was founded by Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia in 1550 to the north of the Bío Bío River, originally in the spot where modern day Penco is now located, therefore people from Concepción are called "Penquistas". On January 1st, 1818 Chile's independence from Spain was proclaimed in the "Plaza de Independencia" by Bernardo O’Higgins. As a result of many large scale earthquakes and tsunamis, which destroyed the town in 1570, 1657, 1687, 1730 and 1751, authorities relocated Concepción to the Valle de la Mocha, its current location, where it has flourished into the beautiful and modern city that it is today.
