To enter Chile a visa valid for 30 to 90 days is required. The list of countries which require a VISA to enter Chile can be seen HERE.
Due to the reciprocity system with certain countries, the Chilean Government charges a fee when entering the country. This fee must be paid in US dollars at immigration, located at the airport before International Police. Visitors with passports from the following countries must pay this fee:
International travellers must make an item declaration at Customs when entering the country. Electronic items, such as video cameras or personal computers, must be declared as “temporary access objects”. Foreign tourists usually don’t have any problem at Customs as long as they are travelling with just their personal belongings and among them are not included:
• Fruits, seeds, vehicles or unprocessed animal products.
• Firearms, ammunition or explosives.
• Illegal drugs.
The peso is Chile’s currency. There are banknotes for 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos. Available coins are worth 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 pesos. Chileans often refer to 1,000 pesos as luca (e.g. $3,000 CLP would be colloquially called tres (three) lucas).
Payment with foreign currency is rarely accepted, except in some hotels that offer exchange rates and payment possibilities to foreign visitors with US dollars.
It is recommended that currency exchange is only done at official money exchange agencies. Such agencies can be found at the airport, downtown, shopping malls and hotels. Exchange rates for the US dollar changes daily; on September 7th of 2017 the Chilean peso rate was $613 pesos to 1 US dollar.
